God of Mercy and Compassion

A classical painting depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with Christ on the cross in the center, flanked by a mourning Mary holding a child and a male figure in a pink garment. The background features a landscape with distant buildings and hills.

The Crucifixion, Biagio D’Antonio, 1480.

God of Mercy and Compassion, written by Edmund Vaughan, is a penitential hymn to help us prepare for Lent.

Place your hopes in the mercy of God and the merits of our Redeemer; say often, looking at the crucifix: There are centered all my hopes.

-St. Paul of the Cross

_The Last Judgment_ painting by Roviale Spagnolo, depicting the final judgment theme around 1550.

Listen to the hymn here:

Lyrics

God of mercy and compassion,
Look with pity upon me.
Father, let me call Thee Father,
โ€™Tis Thy child returns to Thee.

Refrain:
Jesus, Lord, I ask for mercy;
Let me not implore in vain;
All my sinsโ€”I now detest them,
Never will I sin again.

By my sins I have deserved
Death and endless misery;
Hell, with all its pains and torments,
And for all eternity.

By my sins I have abandoned
Right and claim to Heavโ€™n above,
Where the saints rejoice forever,
In a boundless sea of love.

See our Savior, bleeding, dying,
On the cross of Calvary;
To that cross my sins have nailed Him,
Yet He bleeds and dies for me.
